How to Control the Thickness of Thermal Sprayed Metal Coating?

The dry film thickness of the thermal spray coating can generally be controlled by the following method.

Coating thickness report

Usually, before the project starts, the painter of the construction side should carry out a detailed coating thickness report for the workers who perform metal spraying: including the thickness of the metal coating required by the design or contract.

Coating thickness test

To ensure that the thickness of the thermal spray metal coating can be effectively controlled within the required thickness range during the spray construction process, usually, the construction personnel should repeat the metal thermal spray test on the waste component or test panel before the project starts. This allows the sprayer to master the performance of the spray equipment, spray techniques and control through the spray process to effectively control the thickness of the thermal spray coating.

Construction process thickness control

During the construction of thermal spray metal coating, the inspector or the painter shall timely inspect the coating thickness according to the line measurement and point measurement method, and find that the coating thickness does not meet the requirements and correct it in time.

When the thickness of the thermal spray coating is less than the design and contracted values:

If the part with insufficient coating thickness can be found in time before the construction of the closed coating, the thickness of the design and contract can be achieved by refilling.

When the thermal spray coating thickness is greater than the design and contract values:

If the coating thickness is greater than the design and contract value, the site inspector should be informed in time, the inspector should record the area where the thickness does not meet, and the construction party should negotiate with the owner or the purchaser; if the coating thickness is 150% greater than the design and contract value, it should be recorded.

Coating thickness problems are usually caused by improper control of factors such as spray technique, gun speed, spray distance, spray lap width, wire run speed, and the like. The problem of the coating construction process can be corrected in time by analyzing the cause of the thickness deviation.
